A little over a week ago the year 2018 was given to us and ushered in by a sovereign God. I was looking for something a bit different to do in my daily devotional time and to kick start the new year. So I decided to read the first chapter of each book of the Bible, going back and forth between the books of the New and the Old Testaments.
Two pictures of God came off the pages. One found in Genesis 1:2 of God poised, hovering and ready to act on behalf of all His creation. The other is found in Luke 1:13, where the angel tells and assures Zechariah, “God has acted. Your prayers are answered.”
These two realities are true about the unknown of 2018. God is still hovering over all of His creation and is ready to act and be involved in the daily affairs of His creation. God has graciously chosen to be a part of man’s daily grind of living in the tick-tock of time and the opportunities He has sovereignly chosen to give us to accept and embrace.
The angel, God’s messenger, tells Zechariah in the present to not be afraid,(seeing angels was not normal), because with God, Zechariah’s prayer for a son was answered even before his son was conceived. Past tense. Finished. Done. No question. Yet over 9 months would pass before Zachariah would see, feel and hear the answered prayer of a son. The truth is God knows and often man must wait.
God’s prophet Isaiah writes in Chapter 40:31 of his book, “but they who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
So for 2018 with all the unknowns, as Christ followers we wait for God to act and we run because He has promised. May God grant us the grace to both “wait” and “run well” each day of 2018!
Only By Grace!
